Frederick
Singles, Inc. was founded in 1986. Feeling the need for social interaction
with people like yourself. A group of single
men and women got together to talk about the
potential for a singles dance and then dedicated
themselves towards making it happen. There were
7 original founders of the organization. Currently
Ronnie Osterman, Sandy Burns, Robert Burns and
Bonnie Jacques serve on the Board of Directors.
After
much deliberation, it was decided to hold our
first function on March 2, 1986. The site was
chosen (Holiday Inn, Frederick), the disc jockey
selected, and the format established. There were
92 people in attendance and both the organizers
and the members were very pleased with the success
of the evening.
The second
dance was even more of a success. Many of the
people who had attended the first dance returned
for this one and brought quite a few new people
with them. The head count was over 100. Since
its inception, Frederick Singles participation
has increased each and every year. “Now
heading into our 19th year, we average 400 members
at each dance.”
Frederick
Singles, Inc., has made several contributions
to the Frederick community. The contribution
the organization is most proud of is the scholarship
they sponsor each year for a child of a single
parent to attend Frederick Community College. The
first scholarship was granted in 1991. In July
1989, Frederick Singles, Inc., made a generous
donation to the Frederick Art Society for the
mural paintings, "Angels in the Architecture." There
is a brass plaque on the wall of the building
commemorating this gift. Over the following
years, Frederick Singles has made donations to:
• Alzheimer's Association
• American Cancer Society
• Community Walk
• Families Plus!
• Frederick Community Food Bank
• Frederick Sisters Cities Association
• Guatemala Mission
• Heartly House
• Holidays in Historic Frederick
• Hospice
• Out of Darkness Suicide Prevention
• Weinberg Center for the Arts, Inc. |
